What a cool way to spend the weekend. I too have never seen the 1999 film, but I loved the book which I feel a tug to revisit. You've given me some great inspo for a long plane journey I have this coming weekend. Side note: I'm also keen to read Highsmith's diaries & notebooks published in 2021.
I'd be so curious to hear what you think of the 1999 version! It deviates pretty significantly at points from the book, which is why I recommended watching it before reading the novel in order to avoid adaptation disappointment. Though, I think that even the plot deviates, much of the sensibility feels spot on. It's also just such a well done film! But I think this latest adaptation feels maybe the closest to what Highsmith would've given her seal of approval. Also eager to read her diaries.. she sounds like she was quite polarizing, and I'm fascinated that she saw so much of herself in Tom. Safe travels!!
